This month, our school reopened through the dedication of our Haitian teaching and administrative team—and with your faithful support behind them. Although Gros-Morne still remains shielded from the severe violence occurring in the gang-controlled capital, a recent violent incident in the community has created fear, keeping some students away from classes. Still, your prayers and generosity remind our community that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten. Together, we are able to be a steadfast beacon of hope in uncertain times.
Spotlight: A Reflection from Pierre Stanley Baptiste
“I was standing on the corner of Faubert Street in Pétion-Ville, Haiti, lamenting over my non-selection for the SEED scholarship, a U.S. educational opportunity that had the potential to transform my life. Suddenly, this guy who was selected came up to me and said: ‘You know, you are very talented. Even though you weren’t selected this time, you should apply next year. Don’t be discouraged.’ That’s how I met Jacky in 2011, if I remember correctly, and we’ve been friends ever since.
So I was honored when he reached out and asked me to work on the new website and digital strategy for the brand refresh of Act-For-The-Future.
…As violence worsens in Haiti and the days get darker, I believe initiatives like this form the backbone that keeps the country alive and will shape a better-educated generation. Because no matter how dire life becomes, life will continue and the people of Haiti will continue to exist. The best way to ensure that this future existence is at least better than the present is to invest in education, all forms of education.
…All that to say, I’m grateful I got to play a small part in this larger mission of theirs.”
—Pierre Stanley Baptiste
Stanley’s reflection is a powerful reminder: even as Haiti faces hardship, education remains a seed of hope and dignity.
